I did a self-guided walk around the older parts of Basel yesterday, along the old town wall and past lots of galleries, then got one of the several ferries across the Rhein. They are attached to a wire and use the force of the current (which is very strong) and a rudder to get across, no motors involved. There are nice promenades along the river.
The red Town Hall in the centre of Basel is very decorative
Basel is full of beautiful fountains for drinking water, all different.
The zoo is not far away and while not huge, is big enough and very nice. You can get quite close to the animals.
